In the eight years since Bayer Pharmaceuticals first received approval for the sale of their prescription oral contraceptive Yasmin in 2001, the pharmaceutical giant also received approval in 2006 for Yaz, a form of the drug that contains a lower dose of estrogen. Bayer also entered into a marketing and distribution deal with Barr Laboratories, Inc. for Ocella, a generic form of Yasmin.

According to a September 2009 article in the New York Times, Bayer’s global sales for the birth control drugs were estimated to be approximately $1.8 billion.

Reports have surfaced linking the use of all three birth control pills to an increased risk for serious and potentially life threatening side-effects, which have led to the filing of over 70 lawsuits brought on behalf of the women who were harmed by the use of the oral contraceptives.

Synthetic Hormones in Ocella, Yasmin and Yaz May Cause Harm
All three forms of the drug contain drospireone (a substance that mimics progesterone) and estrogen. These synthetic hormones work to not only prevent ovulation, but also prevent fertilization should an egg be released during a woman’s menstrual cycle.

The drugs were also approved to treat women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and moderate to severe acne, but only for women with these conditions who are also taking the oral contraceptive pills for  birth control.  Bayer came under fire in 2009 for their marketing campaigns for the drugs which implied that women could request the drugs to treat adult acne or PMS.

Despite the form of the drug prescribed to a woman, all three drugs have been linked to the following serious side effects:

  • Gall bladder disease that may require surgery;
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or portal vein thrombosis, which causes blood clots to develop in the legs or other veins in the body;
  • Blood clots in the lungs, known as pulmonary embolism (PE);
  • Heart attack;
  • Stroke; or
  • Death.
