In the eight years since Bayer Pharmaceuticals first received approval for the sale of their prescription oral contraceptive Yasmin in 2001, the pharmaceutical giant also received approval in 2006 for Yaz, a form of the drug that contains a lower dose of estrogen. Bayer also entered into a marketing and distribution deal with Barr Laboratories, Inc. for Ocella, a generic form of Yasmin.
According to a September 2009 article in the New York Times, Bayer’s global sales for the birth control drugs were estimated to be approximately $1.8 billion.
Reports have surfaced linking the use of all three birth control pills to an increased risk for serious and potentially life threatening side-effects, which have led to the filing of over 70 lawsuits brought on behalf of the women who were harmed by the use of the oral contraceptives.
