Consider joining our oil spill class action if the Gulf crisis has caused loss of business or devalued your property
A recent CNN news article highlighted the problems of those in the tourism industry in Florida due to the Gulf oil spill. Images from the huge BP oil spill have prompted many tourists to bolt to other destinations. In Florida, Alabama and Mississippi, people whose jobs, businesses and property have been affected by the oil spill are joining class action lawsuits to seek compensation.
Reportedly, many Americans who normally vacation in Florida during the summer are turning to places such as Hilton Head Island or Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. That's set off an intense effort by tourism officials and businesses in the Gulf of Mexico to lure them back.
According to CNN, hotels in Florida, Alabama and Mississippi are using everything from "beach cams" and money-back guarantees to constant updates on their Web sites to get the word out that their beaches are clean and open for business.
Still, the outlook for this summer is bleak in some vacation spots.
Hotel bookings in the Florida Panhandle are down by at least 30 percent compared with this time last year, according to the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association.
Reportely, many hotels in Florida have been getting telephone calls from customers asking if the resorts have any oil on their beaches or if they're expecting oil to come ashore in the coming days.
“We hear devastating stories from commercial fishermen whose businesses are being crushed by this disaster, as well as from restaurant proprietors and home owners along the coast,” said Robin Greenwald, head of the Environmental and Toxic Torts unit of Weitz & Luxenberg. “We are still waiting to see how far the contamination will travel and how many families will lose their main source of income from this oil slick. Already, however, we know of many people gravely impacted by this pollution.”
