On April 20, 2010, the nation suffered what is now considered to be the world’s largest oil spill disaster. The explosion and fire about the oil drilling rig Deepwater Horizons resulted in the deaths of 11 men working aboard the rig and injured many crew members.
Two days after the explosion, the oil rig sank causing the massive oil spill that almost two months later, has caused over 30 million gallons of oil to pollute the Gulf of Mexico.
The drilling rig, which was owned and operated by Transocean Ltd., was engaged in operations on behalf of BP Oil. In the two months since the oil spill tragedy occurred, a number of federal agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of the Interior and the Environmental Protection Agency been involved in the investigation into the oil spill and BP Oil’s attempts to contain the massive oil slick.
Gulf Coast Lodging and Hospitality Industry Affected
The owners, operators, franchisees and employees at countless hotels, golf resorts, vacation rental property agencies, casinos and spas have kept a careful watch on both the potential environmental property damage that may result should the oil slick reach their shores, but the effects of daily news coverage of this potential environmental damage has had on their businesses, income and job security.
Each day, the men and women who staff hotels and other destination lodging businesses face phone calls, e-mails and faxes canceling long-standing room reservations for vacations, family reunions and other events due to concerns that a long-planned vacation may be impacted by oil tainted beachfronts.
In news stories covering hospitality business financial losses, the manager of a Florida resort hotel admitted that news coverage of tar balls had a significant impact on his hotels reservations, which were 50 percent lower than the same time period in 2009.
In addition, data from Smith Travel Research (STR), an independent research company that serves U.S. lodging industry, reflects a drop in reservations, occupancy and average daily rates (ADRs) at Gulf coast hotels.
Those who work in the hospitality industry in Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Texas and Mississippi also face significant financial losses. The cause and effect between canceled reservations, unbooked rooms and the Gulf region economy may mean loss of hours and layoffs for hotel, restaurant, retail and other employees that depend upon tourist income to earn their livelihoods.
