Since the April 2010 oil spill that has contaminated the Gulf of Mexico, it has been estimated that over 30 million gallons of oil have been released into the Gulf waters. In the weeks since the oil spill disaster, BP Oil has attempted several means to contain and cap the spill.
In those weeks, a number of federal agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of the Interior and the Environmental Protection Agency have been investigating the spill and cleanup attempts. President Obama, EPA Chief Lisa Jackson, and Attorney General Eric Holder have all visited the Gulf to meet with those involved in the cleanup and containment efforts.
Likely Civil and Criminal Actions Against Responsible Parties
While the government’s primary focus has been on efforts to prevent the oil slick from contaminating Gulf coast shorelines in Florida, Louisiana, Alabama and other areas, Attorney General Holder has announced that the U.S. Justice Department may be considering both civil and criminal charges against the parties responsible for the oil spill disaster. In addition to BP Oil, Transocean (the corporation that owned the oil rig) and Halliburton (the contractor who cemented the oil well) may be facing both civil and criminal lawsuits.
