Since the April 2010 explosion and fire aboard an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf has been polluted by what has been estimated to be 12,000-19,000 barrels of crude oil that have spilled into the Gulf waters each day.
As of the end of May 2010, it was estimated that the Gulf region has faced water pollution caused by the flow of over 30 million gallons of oil, and as of June 2010, efforts to contain the oil spill have not been successful.
As a result of the oil slick and the potential damage to the beaches, wetlands and other shoreline areas, residents and business owners in Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas and other regions have been bracing for—and in some cases are already seeing—the financial implications from the oil spill.
Gulf Region’s Restaurant Industry
Each day, the owners, operators and employees of thousands of restaurants in the Gulf Region are facing potential lost revenues, reduced work hours and possible staff reductions due to the oil spill.
Concerns about air and water pollution, contaminated beaches and the losses of sea life have caused many vacationers in both the U.S. and abroad to make alternate vacation plans or to cancel pre-existing reservations to visit Gulf coast hotels, casinos, resorts and spas.
The financial implications for the Gulf region’s restaurant industry led to the filing of a lawsuit on behalf of ten restaurant owners and a restaurant distributor in Louisiana. The lawsuit alleges that the oil spill has led to both financial losses for their businesses and increased operating expenses. The lawsuit also alleges the restaurants have already seen lost business because of customer fears about higher menu costs, concerns about the safety of local seafood served on the menus and possibility that many Gulf coast restaurants will be unable to meet customer demand for shellfish and seafood because of reduced commercial fishing harvests.
Economic Carry-Over for Employees of Restaurants, Other Tourist Businesses
The oil spill’s implications on the Gulf region’s economy may be seen in the wallets of those least able to endure financial strain. The potential loss of tourist income may force restaurant owners to reduce staff hours or lay off employees, leaving kitchen staffs, servers and busboys that depend upon tourist income to earn their livelihoods seriously affected.
Similarly, tourist driven businesses such as gift shops, souvenir shops and companies that rent equipment to vacationing bikers, boaters, swimmers and surfers to also reduce hours for both full time and seasonal employees.
