New Jersey Residents and State Organ Donor Program

By 2013, New Jersey drivers, as well as those who hold non-driver identification cards issued by the state, will be able to formally register in the New Jersey organ donor program.

The law, called the New Jersey Hero Act, will require residents to acknowledge receipt of informational materials about organ donation and make their wishes known in the event they are involved in a catastrophic event. New Jersey is the first state to enact a law of this type.

The goal of the Hero Act is to provide a thoughtful and proactive way for this decision to be made, rather than placing the burden on family members dealing with the stress and shock of their loved one’s fatal prognosis.

According to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, approximately 1.75 million New Jersey residents (only 24.5 percent of the state’s population holding licenses or ID cards) have made their wishes known under the current system.
