An article in the April 6, 2008 edition of the New York Times discusses the more than 3,000 women who have brought lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson, maker of Ortho Evra.
The Times points out that the drugmaker "obscured evidence that its popular Orth Evra birth control patch delivered much more estrogen than standard birth control pills," according to internal copy documents.
That dangerously high level of estrogen in Ortho Evra increases the risk of blood clots and strokes.
The report goes on to say that documents and emails from Johnson & Johnson indicate that even before the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved Ortho Evra in 2001, the company's own researchers found that the patch delivered much more estrogen daily than low-dose pills.
