Legal News: Idaho Woman Sues Drugmaker Over Ortho Evra Patch Problems
October 16, 2006
In legal news in Boise, Idaho, a woman using the Ortho Evra birth-control
patch is now suing Johnson and Johnson, as well as drugmaker Ortho McNeil, after
developing deep vein thrombosis.
According to a report in The
Associated Press, Katy McKellips Braman, 17, began using the patch in 2004,
and developed a dangerous blood clot just a month after being on the Ortho Evra
patch.
Braman is suing to get the companies to pay her damages and to
cover the costs of future medical treatment.
In a warning last month, the
Food and Drug Administration issued an updated warning on the
label of the Ortho Evra birth-control patch, informing consumers that women who
use it face the possibility of an increased risk of blood clots in the legs and
lungs if they use Ortho Evra instead of The Pill.
