The ordeal of developing osteonecrosis of the jaw from Fosamax use
Imagine the horror of your own body turning against you. Imagine the very medicine you took to heal your bones causing fractures and internal decay. Unfortunately, many people do not have to imagine this at all. Their own jaws require extensive surgery to remove and replace dead bone. This living terror is known as osteonecrosis of the jaw, and it has been linked to the drug Fosamax. Talk to the lawyers at Weitz & Luxenberg for a free consultation to prepare your case over this painful, traumatic ordeal.
What is Fosamax?
Fosamax is a prescription medicine developed by Merck & Co. pharmaceuticals for the treatment or prevention of osteoporosis (the loss of bone density). Fosamax is designed to increase bone mass in people with osteoporosis. Unfortunately, it has a tendency to make the dense bone extremely brittle.
In addition to causing "low-impact" or "low-energy" breaks in the normally strong femur, Fosamax has another documented side effect that is horrifying even to think about: osteonecrosis of the jaw.
What is osteonecrosis of the jaw?
Osteonecrosis is the destruction (necrosis) of bone tissue, often due to an interference with the supply of blood to the bone. This is a painful condition where the bone, rather than healing after trauma such as dental surgery, is unable to grow new bone tissue, and dies.
Symptoms of Osteonecrosis include pain, swelling, infection of the gums, loosening of teeth, poor healing of the gums, and numbness or the feeling of heaviness in the jaw.
A majority of the patients require surgery to removed the diseased bone. In orthognathic surgery bones can be cut and moved, held in place with plates and screws. As you can imagine, this is a painful surgery with a long healing process full of difficulty talking, eating and even breathing. As the majority of Fosamax users are older women with osteoporosis, there are even more complications to consider.
