Know the Risks Behind PAH Benzo(a)pyrene
Numerous epidemiologic studies have shown a clear association between
exposure of PAHs containing benzo(a)pyrene and increased risk of lung cancer and
other tumors.
Benzo(a)pyrene is readily absorbed following inhalation,
oral, and dermal routes of administration.
Benzo(a)pyrene are present in
charcoal broiled hamburgers. They form in wood fires, so they are not just from
mechanical or industrial processes.
Benzo(a)pyrene can also be derived
from coal tar. Benzo(a)pyrene occurs ubiquitously in products of incomplete
combustion of fossil fuels and has been identified in ambient air, surface
water, drinking water and waste water.
Some people who drink water
containing benzo(a)pyrene in excess over many years may experience reproductive
difficulties and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.
