The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a National Priorities List that identifies the 1,408 most dangerous hazardous waste sites in the United States. These sites are targeted for long-term federal clean-up activities.

Of these sites, PAHs have been found in at least 600, despite the fact that searches were not done for this specific pollutant.

As the EPA evaluates more sites, the number of sites at which PAHs are found may increase.

This is important information since exposure to PAHs can have harmful health effects and because these sites are potential or actual sources of human exposure to PAHs.
