Lawyer will help you file a lawsuit against Paxil over the hole in your infant's heart
A Mother’s Heartache Becomes Her Child’s
GlaxoSmithKline, the maker of the antidepressant Paxil, failed to notify consumers that the side effects could hurt their unborn child. Mothers who took Paxil for depression during or immediately preceding pregnancy were never informed, and are now forced to endure further agony as they watch their babies struggle to survive with “holes” in their hearts.
Suffering from depression, many women had turned to their healthcare providers for help. When their doctors prescribed Paxil, the expectant mothers never suspected it was only the beginning of even greater suffering. These innocent victims deserve due compensation for their health problems, and Weitz & Luxenberg is here to help. But what are the health problems associated with Paxil? Read on.
Paxil and Birth Defects: Hole in Disclosure Statement Leads to Holes in the Hearts of Infants
While some defects resolve themselves without treatment, many infants are born with the burden of lifelong heart conditions that require them to undergo multiple surgeries. There are two major types of heart defect that can affect a child in these circumstances:
- Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) – affects the ventricular septum, which is the wall that separates the left and right ventricles. In these cases, either the muscular or membranous portion of the ventricular septum is affected; the latter is more common.
- Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) – affects the interatrial septum, which is the tissue that separates the atria.
When the septum is absent, blood can flow from one side of the heart to the other, causing the dangerous mix of oxygenated arterial blood and deoxygenated venous blood. No mother should have to go to sleep each night wondering if she will find her child with the blue lips and fingers of cyanosis when next she checks the crib.
Justice Can Be Yours
In October 2009, the first case to allege Paxil-related birth defects resulted in a plaintiff’s verdict, giving $2.5 million dollars to the family of a boy born with a hole in his heart, and giving hope to others that GlaxoSmithKline would be brought to justice. This was only the beginning, as GlaxoSmithKline agreed to pay over one billion dollars to settle the 800 cases against Paxil in July 2010.
