Will My Baby Require Heart Surgery? Learn the Horrors of Paxil
Babies born to mothers who took Paxil (paroxetine) during pregnancy,
especially in the first trimester, are at serious risk of being born with
cardiovascular birth defects. The most serious Paxil birth defects are holes in
the heart.
If your baby is born with holes in his or her heart, he or she
might outgrow them, but, if the birth defect is serious enough, your baby might
need surgery. There are many surgical procedures used to treat ventricular
septal defects and atrial septal defects.
Median sternotomy is a surgical procedure in which a vertical inline incision is made along the sternum, after which the sternum itself is divided, or "cracked". This procedure provides access to the heart and lungs for surgical procedures including heart transplant, corrective surgery for congenital heart defects (CHD's), or coronary artery bypass surgery.
