Astoria, Oregon's Columbia River, Filled With PCB, Spurs Cleanup
Contaminants such as DDT, PCB and PAH are entering into the Columbia River in
Astoria, Oregon.
According to the local newspaper, The Daily
Astorian, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has research
that shows such toxics can have damaging effects on endangered fish
species.
In response to tests that show dangerous levels of contamination
in the river, the Environmental Protection Agency has made it a priority to
reduce the toxics in the water and fish tissue by 10 percent in five
years.
State and local officials are hammering out a plan to affect that
goal.
More funding, they say, is necessary to bring the project to
fruition.
