Peachtree Residents: Fight Contamination with an Environmental Lawyer
October 16, 2007, Peachtree, North Carolina--Residents in Peachtree recently learned that it is no longer safe to drink, bathe, or wash clothes using their water supply.
The Environmental Protection Agency discovered contaminated groundwater 20 years ago in an area nearby, and concern is growing that this same contamination is spreading and may now be affecting residents in Peachtree.
Local newspaper the Cherokee Scout spoke with a couple in the area that had taken on defense contractor Northrop Grumman, when it was discovered that Grumman's local plant was responsible for groundwater contamination in their community dating back to 1987.
According to the Scout, Marvin and Barbara Garrett stopped using their spring's water when they were given the option to receive water from Murphy's public water system.
Barbara Garrett was diagnosed with nerve cancer after learning their spring may have contained the chemicals TCE and PCE, the newspaper said.
Health director Bob Wood was quoted in that same article as saying that the chemicals from that original contamination may have remained in the ground for two decades, thus causing the emerging contamination in Peachtree.
