Pesticide Herbicide and Rodenticide Warnings: Watch out for pesticides
August 18th, 2005 (theheraldbulletin.com)
When we send our children back to school this fall, can we be assured that they’ll be learning in a safe environment? Not when it comes to pesticides and the pests they’re designed to kill. The Journal of the American Medical Association reported on July 27 that the rate of new illnesses associated with pesticide exposure at schools increased significantly in children from 1998 to 2002. Pesticide industry trade groups were quick to respond to the JAMA news, even before its release, but the fact is this: Every day children spend in the classroom, students are exposed to pesticides and the exposure is unnecessary — these poisons are not effective in preventing rodents, roaches or other pests that prowl classrooms and cafeterias.
It’s not just a waste of money, it’s a threat to the health and welfare of our children. Pests in a school building can lead to disease, stings, bites and allergies. As for pesticides, most of these chemicals are nerve poisons and the nervous systems of developing children are vulnerable.
