Have you been affected by a petroleum spill in your neighborhood? Contact our environmental lawyers.

An oil spill releases liquid petroleum into the environment. It often results in significant pollution. The oil may be a variety of materials, including crude oil, refined petroleum products (such as gasoline or diesel fuel) or by-products, ships' bunkers, oily refuse or oil mixed in waste.

Spills take months or even years to clean up. If your quality of life has been affected, you have a right to seek justice with an environmental lawsuit.

Petroleum can affect your central nervous system, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. One petroleum compound can cause headaches and dizziness at high levels in the air.

Another compound can cause a nerve disorder called "peripheral neuropathy," consisting of numbness in the feet and legs.

Other petroleum compounds can cause effects on the blood, immune system, lungs, skin, and eyes.

Studies have shown that petroleum exposure may have an adverse effect on the lungs, central nervous system, liver, and kidney.

Some petroleum compounds have also been shown to affect reproduction and the developing fetus in animals. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has determined that one petroleum compound (benzene) is carcinogenic to humans.

IARC has determined that other petroleum-based compounds (benzo[a]pyrene and gasoline) are probably and possibly carcinogenic to humans.
