In 2009, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published their latest update to the National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals. The report provides detailed information based on studies of exposure to hundreds of environmental chemicals that pose potential health risks. This most recent report includes exposure and health risk information for over 212 environmental chemicals, as well as data from the three previous reports the CDC has published.
CDC Data on Phthalates
The CDC studied the possible ways in which people are exposed to phthalates, including ingestion, breathing in phthalates vapors and skin contact with products that contain phthalates. A 2003 study revealed that infants have a greater risk of ingestion exposure stemming from bottles, nipples or pacifiers manufactured with phthalates-containing materials, from sucking or chewing on plastic toys that were manufactured with the chemicals, or even from nursing if their mother had been exposed to phthalates.
More Serious Phthalates Affect Newborn Boys
Other medical and scientific studies have been conducted regarding more serious and life-long health problems for children that may be caused by phthalates: that parents who work in industries that manufacture products that contain phthalates can pass on serious birth defects to their sons.
Workplace phthalates exposure has been linked to a class of infant birth defects known as testicular dysgenesis syndrome (TDS).
Boys with TDS are typically born with serious reproductive organ deformities, including:
As these boys reach adulthood, other TDS-related conditions may become present, including fertility problems and sexual function disorders. As adults, TDS patients also face a lifelong risk of developing testicular cancer, as boys born with cryptorchidism are at a much greater risk of developing the disease.
