Those Who Worked in PVC Manufacturing and Compounding Industries Exposed to Phthalates. Worker Exposure Can Cause Reproductive Organ Birth Defects in Newborn Boys.
If you or a loved one has worked in an industry where Phthalates were produced or materials containing phthalates such as PVC compounding were manufactured, our environmental attorneys would like to meet with you. Men and women with industrial exposure to phthalates who have children during the period of their exposure are at increased risk to pass on reproductive birth defects to their sons known as testicular dysgenesis syndrome (TDS).

For decades, hundreds of consumer items and building products have contained a chemical known as polyvinyl chloride, or PVC. PVC compounding materials are used in the manufacture of vinyl handbags and belts; inflatable pools, beds and chairs; garden hoses; children’s toys; and even disposable medical products such as IV bags.
PVC compounding is also used in vinyl roofing, flooring and siding materials, window framing; gutters and drain spouts, and plumbing and heating pipes.
PVC and Phthalates
Phthalates, a group of chemicals that is used in the manufacture and production of PVC compounding materials, as well as other plastic and rubber products, is added to the materials that make consumer, construction and industrial products as a plasticizer.
For PVC-containing soft plastic and rubber goods like gaskets and hoses, adding phthalates helps them to maintain their flexibility and resilience. In PVC compounding materials used in construction and other industries, the addition of phthalates increases their durability and makes them better able to withstand temperature changes.
Exposure to Phthalates During Manufacture of PVC and PVC-Containing Products Can Cause Harm to Future Generations
A June 2008 article published in the Annals of Occupational Hygiene notes that phthalates are being evaluated as “possible human reproductive and developmental toxicants.”
The scientific study evaluated cases of individuals who worked in industries where phthalates were made or products containing phthalates were manufactured to determine possible health risks.
One of their disturbing discoveries was that workers in these industries, when expecting a new son, had a higher likelihood of having a baby boy born with reproductive organ birth defects.
Phthalate Exposure and Testicular Dysgenesis Syndrome
Boys born with TDS can show signs of defects or deformities at birth. The most common newborn birth defects in boys with TDS are Cryptorchidism (un-descended testicles), Hypospadias (a condition where the opening of the urethra is on the underside of their penis instead of at the tip) and other testicular deformities. Both conditions are surgically correctible, although in some babies, the testicles will descend on their own within the first six months of life. For most babies with hypospadias, the condition does not interfere with the child’s ability to urinate, and surgery can be delayed for several months.
Other TDS-related conditions present themselves during adolescence and adulthood. TDS patients have been diagnosed with fertility issues and can experience sexual function problems. Most significantly, boys born with TDS are at an increased risk for testicular cancer.
