Indoor Playgrounds: Does your child have an injury? What you need to know.
Indoor playgrounds are a common place for injury in children.
60% of all playground injuries result in fractures, mostly from falls onto non-resilient surfaces.
According to the National Program for Playground Safety, indoor playground surfaces should be either rubber matting or shock absorbing carpet systems that are at least 4 inches think, preferably 12 inches thick.
The NPPS has tested often used materials such as exercise mats and floor tiles and determined they are not sufficient in preventing injuries from falls.
These play areas, designed for various stages of a child's physical development, can be found in locations such as the following:
Restaurants: McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, Chuck E. Cheese's,
Retail Locations: IKEA, Supermarkets, Malls
Childcare Facilities: Daycare, Pre-Schools, After-school Centers, Summer Camps
Other: Fitness Centers (Gyms), Hotels, Highway Rest Stops
