Pleural mesothelioma is a cancer that attacks the pleura, or the lining, of the lungs.

Mesothelioma can also develop in the lining of the abdomen or the heart. "Asbestos lung cancer" is a common name for pleural mesothelioma because asbestos is the primary cause of the disease.

Through inhalation, asbestos fibers become inserted in the pleura of the lungs and many years later cause inflammation that leads to the growth of cancerous tumors.

Chest pain is the most common symptom of pleural mesothelioma. However, the pain often occurs in the shoulder or upper abdomen.

Dyspnea, shortness of breath, is also a symptom. Some patients report coughing, weight loss and anorexia as less common symptoms.

The pleural mesothelioma cancer tumors grow rapidly and enlarge the pleural space, causing it to fill with fluid. This fluid leads to the discomfort or pain associated with first detection of the disease.
