PLEURAL PERICARDIAL
Mesothelioma types are named for the cancer’s point of origin
Pleural, peritoneal and pericardial mesotheliomas.
June 24, 2010 – Mesothelioma is caused by occupational asbestos exposure. There are four types of mesothelioma: pleural, peritoneal, pericardial and testicular.
In each case, the cancer develops in the membranous linings that surround and protect certain internal organs. The different names for each type of mesothelioma refer to the point of origin of the cancer.
PLEURAL MESOTHELIOMA
Pleural mesothelioma represents about 75 percent of all mesothelioma cases. Pleural mesothelioma is caused by the inhalation of airborne asbestos fibers that become lodged in the lining of the lungs, called the pleura.
PERITONEAL MESOTHELIOMA
Mesothelioma of the abdomen is called peritoneal mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma accounts for approximately 15 percent of all types of mesothelioma cases.
PERICARDIAL MESOTHELIOMA
Pericardial mesothelioma is the rarest form of the disease, and it affects the linings of the heart cavity. Less than 10 percent of all types of mesothelioma cases are related to the heart.
TESTICULAR MESOTHELIOMA
Testicular mesothelioma is the rarest of all mesothelioma cancers, as less than 100 cases have been recorded.
