In recent news about the dangers of asbestos exposure, a plumber died as a result of inhaling asbestos fibers possibly from plumbing jobs done as much as 50 years earlier.
The plumber died at a hospital in New York on August 16 this year at the age of 72.
He had been diagnosed in May with mesothelioma, a form of cancer commonly associated with asbestos.
He had left school at 16 and was apprenticed as a plumber, working with a number of companies in the New York area.
Part of the plumbing jobs involved stripping down boilers and pipes, which were insulated with asbestos.
In the 1950s and 1960s the dangers of asbestos were not known by the public at large and almost no protective equipment was issued.
When he became ill he was sent to a hospital in Manhattan and a diagnosis of mesothelioma was made.
A doctor confirmed there was a malignant mesothelioma spreading into his abdominal cavity, which was instrumental in causing the bronchial pneumonia and subsequent septicaemia which eventually killed him.
Shortly before his death, he filed a mesothelioma lawsuit to seek compensation for his injuries.
