Charles Poletti Power Project and asbestos exposure on the job
Charles Poletti Power Project, located in Queens, was built as an oil-fueled facility and later transformed to run on natural gas.
The power station was shut down due to environmental concerns in January 2010.
Queens Assemblyman Michael Gianaris was one of the harshest critics of the Poletti powerhouse and was quoted as saying, "The imminent closing of one of the biggest polluters in New York City marks a major achievement in our long struggle to improve air quality."
In addition to air pollution concerns voiced by citizens living around the plant, the powerhouse was also hazardous to people who worked in it.
When it was built, asbestos use wasn't well regulated.
Unfortunately, inhalation of asbestos fibers and dust can cause lung cancer and mesothelioma, and also asbestosis, a potentially life-threatening respiratory condition.
Asbestos fibers may have been present in the work environment of those employed at the Poletti Power Project, who might also have, unknowingly, carried them home and contaminated their family members.
It is crucial, therefore, for those who worked at Poletti and other such powerhouses to discuss asbestos exposure with a physician.
