EPA hosted a meeting on the Dayton, OH vapor contamination investigation, Feb 8, 2007

Communities around the country often opt to mobilize, become informed, and fight for their right to a clean environment. Such is the case for the people in Dayton, Ohio, who have been confronted with pollution in their area. Below is the release the Environmental Protection Agency send out on the matter:

EPA RELEASE ON VAPOR CONTAMINATION IN OH--CHICAGO (Jan. 30, 2007) U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 will host a public meeting to update residents on its plans for air quality sampling in homes near the Behr-Dayton paint facility in Dayton, Ohio. The meeting will be 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 8, at Kiser School Cafeteria, 1401 Leo St., Dayton.

Representatives from Ohio EPA, Ohio Department of Health, local governments and responsible party Daimler-Chrysler, a former operator of the facility, are also expected.

Prior sampling has shown that ground water supplies in the area south of the intersection of Leo St. and Daniel St. are contaminated with the chemical TCE (trichloroethylene). The TCE produces vapors that are seeping into some homes in the area. EPA has already identified several homes that will get vapor abatement systems installed this winter. The agency now seeks access from property owners to sample additional homes. There will be no charge to area residents for the sampling or, if necessary, installation of the vapor abatement systems.

For more information or to request special accommodations at the meeting, contact Rafael P. Gonzalez, EPA community involvement coordinator, (800) 621-8431, Ext. 60269, or gonzalez.rafaelp@epa.gov, weekdays, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
