EPA Develops Facebook Group Page to Keep Pompton Lakes, NJ Residents Informed About DuPont Contamination Issues

When representatives of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) met with residents in the Pompton Lakes, NJ area in January 2010 to discuss environmental contamination issues, one of the issues they faced was a way to keep residents apprised of developments and news in a real-time environment. To that end, the EPA developed a new communication and discussion tool by taking advantage of social networking Web sites, including Facebook.

The EPA already maintains a section on their Web site specific to Pompton Lakes, NJ issues on the EPA Web site.

In addition, the EPA also operates a number of pages on Twitter.com, including a page dedicated to each of the 10 regions regulated by the EPA. New Jersey, as well as New York, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are under the oversight of EPA Region 2. Pompton Lakes area Twitter users who want to receive updates (known as “tweets”) from the EPA can follow them by clicking on this link.

The EPA on Facebook
Since the EPA’s Pompton Lakes Facebook Group page was created in February 2010, over 250 area residents have subscribed to the page. The group page includes basic information on contaminated DuPont site, and a section where area residents can discuss environmental issues of concern.

According to the group’s mission statement, the group page is intended to provide a means for the EPA to share information and discuss issues related to the Dupont/Pompton Lakes site. The EPA's community involvement coordinator will be serving as the group’s moderator.

Facebook users who want to join the Pompton Lakes, NJ group can do so by clicking here.
