In recent news about older power plants and the asbestos cancer risk, a New York City man diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer has made a successful claim against the manufacturers of the asbestos found in the power plant in which he worked decades ago.
The Queens resident, 74, says he was exposed to asbestos fibers and dust during the four years he worked at a former power plant in the 1960s.
The ex-power plant worker was diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer last month and has been awarded a six-figure sum as a result of his asbestos claim.
He says he is worried about the health of former coworkers who worked at the power plant facility.
He recalled that periodically, a steam line would blow and even the power plant workers that worked on the asbestos would hammer the asbestos and it would flake off.
"So you had all these asbestos fibers floating around in the area so they themselves would have been subjected to it," he said.
The man's asbestos lawyer pointed out that he and his client were speaking out to highlight how dangerous asbestos exposure can be to the public.
"Although this paticular power plant is no longer in existence this is a deadly legacy it's left behind," he said.
