POWER PLANT WORKERS
Industrial quantities of asbestos materials inside power plants make workers vulnerable to fatal diseases
Before the enactment of work-site regulations governing the use of asbestos, certain power plant employers cared little about providing safe conditions for workers.
Power plant owners and asbestos product manufacturers deliberately kept workers uninformed about asbestos health hazards to reduce overhead expenses and boost profit margins. Consequently, over the decades, thousands of power plant workers have died from occupational asbestos exposure and diseases that include asbestosis and mesothelioma.
After such blatant employer negligence, the families of dying power plant workers have few remedies against financial ruin other than to file asbestos claims with help from a proven asbestos litigation firm like Weitz & Luxenberg, long recognized for obtaining multimillion-dollar verdicts and settlements for asbestos-injured clients.
If you once worked at a power plant, no matter how long ago, and have been diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease, Weitz & Luxenberg will provide a free legal consultation and information on how asbestos claims can help.
POWER PLANT WORKERS
May 24, 2010 – Power plant workers – particularly electricians, pipe fitters, boilermakers and other maintenance personnel – are among those high-risk asbestos jobs that threaten workers with the greatest chance for asbestos exposure and death.
Power plant workers have always relied on asbestos to insulate against the extraordinary temperatures that industrial machinery can generate.
Power plant machinery, for example, contained asbestos gaskets used to seal pumps and valves. Workers typically installed these gaskets (some made by hand out of loose asbestos materials) by knifing through old asbestos insulation wraps just to get to the gasket.
In the process of crafting and installing asbestos-made gaskets and cutting old insulation, workers inadvertently inhaled airborne asbestos fibers. Employers rarely provided masks or respirators prior to the 1980s. As a result, thousands of power plant workers across the nation have already died from occupational asbestos exposure, leaving families without a breadwinner.
Despite the current trend to remove asbestos from work site areas, many plants still contain asbestos. Power plant workers should be particularly alert to ensure that they avoid asbestos exposure. And respirators or filtering masks should always be worn, according to federal and state agencies.
