Lead is virtually everywhere, and you can’t see, taste, or smell it. Sources include contaminated air, water and soil.
Lead poisoning typically occurs over time. In children, however, even small amounts can cause immediate health problems. No levels in the body are safe. At very high levels, lead poisoning can be fatal.
When adults contract lead poisoning, they can typically trace it to the workplace. You can inhale lead dust or fumes, or swallow dust while eating, drinking or smoking. Anyone who has worked with lead-based products is at risk.
