U.S. Jury Finds that Wyeth Drug Prempro Caused a Woman's Breast Cancer
October 4, 2006 (Reuters)
After finding that Wyeth's Prempro drug--used as a hormone replacement--caused a woman's breast cancer, a jury awarded her and her husband $1.5 million in compensatory damages.
The case against Wyeth dealt with whether the drugmaker was negligent in the testing, manufacture and marketing of its hormone replacement drugs, and awarded punitive damages to the plaintiff.
To date, according to Reuters, Wyeth is facing 5,000 lawsuits involving those drugs.
The second phase of the trial begins on October 12. At that time, a jury will decide whether Wyeth failed to warn consumers of the dangers of Prempro.
