Antidepressants and Risk of Birth Defects

Pregnant women taking Prozac (fluoxetine) and other SSRI antidepressants to treat symptoms of depression need to know about their side effects. One side effect includes the risk of persistent pulmonary hypertension in babies exposed to Prozac in the last few months of pregnancy, as well as other birth defects.

In February of 2006, the New England Journal of Medicine reported that babies exposed to antidepressants like Prozac in the last trimester were 6 times more likely to develop the lung disorder persistent pulmonary hypertension than babies who were not exposed.

According the report, 6 to 12 newborns in 1,000 developed persistent pulmonary hypertension after exposure to Prozac during pregnancy, versus 1 to 2 newborns on average.

If you took Prozac or another SSRI during your pregnancy and your baby was born with persistent pulmonary hypertension, you may be able to sue the drug's manufacturer and ensure your baby has a better future with the help of a lawyer from Weitz & Luxenberg.

We've helped thousands of people with their defective drug cases since 1986. Our courtroom experience can give your baby the advantage he or she needs to be compensated for his or her unnecessary suffering so early in life.
