Lawsuit Information on Radiation Contamination - What Weitz & Luxenberg Can Do For You
Radiation is energy that travels in the form of waves or high-speed particles. Radiation occurs naturally (sunlight and sound waves) or is man-made (X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, nuclear weapons, nuclear power plants and cancer treatments). If you think you have been exposed to radiation and are considering a lawsuit, please read on.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), one of the most common sources of concern is radon gas in homes, schools and community buildings. Radon is a colorless, odorless, naturally occurring radionuclide that exists in soils and seeps into the air. It is a decay product of radium that will register in professional air-quality tests.
If a house is built on soil that contains radon, the gas can seep into the building through cracks in the foundation and accumulate in basements and lower floors. Inhaling radon gas can result in the release of high-energy particles directly to the lungs and surrounding tissues. It is a leading cause of lung cancer. Because this kind of radiation exposure is common, serious and largely avoidable, the EPA recommends communities increase their awareness of potential radon gas in homes, schools, and older community buildings.
While inhaling radon gas is one pathway to exposure, another pathway is through ingestion, and that can occur from a variety of sources, including: radioactively contaminated drinking water or polluted ground water; working closely with radioactively contaminated soil in farming; locally grown food plants that take up certain soil radioactivity; use of radioactively contaminated water to irrigate crops; local livestock operations when radionuclides that accumulate in animal tissue are present; consumption of fish with radioactivity from local bodies of water; or people bathing, swimming, or otherwise using radioactive water sources.
If you have been affected by radiation, a Weitz & Luxenberg lawyer can help you file a radiation lawsuit and help you sue those responsible for your radiation exposure.
