Ravena dust coming from Lafarge Cement Plant: Pathologist
Environmental lawyer Robin Greenwald attends Lafarge Cement Plant meeting on stone dust in Ravena community.
3.31.10--RAVENA, NEW YORK--New information has come to light on the dust from the Lafarge Cement Plant in Ravena, New York and how it may be affecting the community.
In a Ravena community meeting, Dr. Ward Stone, a wildlife pathologist for the state Department of Environmental Conservation, presented his most recent study findings concerning pollutants being emitted by the Lafarge Cement Plant, according to the Daily Mail newspaper.Reportedly, Dr. Ward highlighted the view that stone dust emanating from the plant is a conduit for pollutants in the community.
The pathologist was quoted in the article as saying, “The stone dust is surprisingly hazardous, including mechanically damaging the respiratory system when we breathe it in.”
To a rapt, packed crowd including Weitz & Luxenberg environmental attorney Robin Greenwald, Stone relayed to the Ravena residents seated in the VFW hall that much of the toxins found in areas surrounding the plant could also be found in the dust.
Based on his research, Stone indicated that the dust drifts from truck deliveries exiting the Lafarge Ravena Cement Plant, as well as from the large piles on plant property, and the conveyor belt.
This dust then settles in local bodies of water, farmlands and, along the Route 9W corridor near the plant.
Greenwald, head of the Environmental and Toxic Torts unit, reportedly said the area school has been resistant to allowing testing at the district.
“Why doesn’t Lafarge want to know about the health of those children?” she reportedly said at the meeting.
