The Lafarge cement plant in Ravena NY is second only to the state’s largest coal-fired power plant in emitting mercury pollution, according to a company study issued to the state Department of Environmental Conservation, said an article in the Times Union newspaper.
The study suggests most of the remaining mercury came either from coal used to fuel Lafarge’s two high-temperature cement kilns, or from coal fly ash, a waste product from coal-fired power plants that’s subsequently used as an ingredient in cement, the Times Union reported.
According to government reports, Mercury causes developmental problems in fetuses and children.
David Carpenter, director of the Institute of Health and the Environment at the University at Albany, was quoted in the article saying elemental mercury is a health concern, and levels from Lafarge ought to be reduced.
“This is the most dangerous type of mercury," Carpenter reportedly said.
Keri Powell, an attorney with Washington, D.C.-based environmental group Earthjustice, agreed that Lafarge must be compelled to lower its mercury emissions, saying, “It is widely acknowleged that mercury in fly ash varies widely. The better job that a power plant does at controlling mercury, the more is going to wind up in the fly ash.”
