When Reclast was first granted approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in August 2007, physicians and researchers saw the drug as an innovative treatment for women suffering from osteoporosis.
While osteoporosis can affect men and women of any age, the condition typically affects post-menopausal women that may also be at risk for the condition because of dietary and lifestyle issues. Being overweight, eating a diet high in sodium and smoking all cause calcium levels to decrease, which in turn, causes bone density and bone mass levels to also decrease to levels which put individuals at risk for bone fractures and other bone health problems.
Studies of Reclast, Other Osteoporosis Drugs
Reclast, along with several other medications prescribed to treat osteoporosis such as Actonel, Boniva, Fosamax and Zometa, are in a class of drugs called bisphosphonates. Actonel, Boniva and Fosamax are oral medications that can be prescribed to be taken daily, weekly or monthly.
Reclast and Zometa are both IV infusion medications that are administered in a physician’s office. Zometa is prescribed to help maintain bone density and bone mass levels in patients diagnosed with melanoma or bone cancer. However, Reclast is only prescribed to treat osteoporosis.
Reclast and Femur Fractures
While a number of common side effects are associated with the use of bisphosphonate drugs, one of the more serious health problems that has been associated with these drugs is currently being investigated by the FDA: that patients taking Reclast or the other four drugs listed on this page may be at an increased risk for non-trauma related femur fractures.
The reports currently being studied by the FDA include reports that some patients who had femur (thigh bone) breaks occurred in patients who had not been involved in an accident, fall or other event that would have potentially caused a bone fracture.
