On February 26, 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an important warning about the serious health risks associated with the long-term use of drugs that contain Metoclopramide—marketed under the brand name Reglan.
In particular, the drug has been linked to an involuntary muscle spasm condition known as tardive dyskinesia (TD).
The alert came after the FDA reviewed a number of reports from healthcare professionals regarding patients with chronic acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) that had been treated with the medication for their health problems.
Tardive Dyskinesia
According to information from the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NIDH), TD causes repetitive, involuntary, purposeless movements involving both facial muscles and other areas of the body.
Involuntary facial muscle issues may involve grimacing, tongue protrusion, lip smacking, puckering and pursing, and rapid eye blinking. Rapid movements of the arms, legs, and trunk may also occur, and finger movements in TD patients may appear to be mimicking playing the piano or guitar.
Tragically, there is no standard treatment for TD, and no cure exists. Even when patients discontinue the use of Reglan or other drugs known to cause TD, the symptoms may remain long after patients stop taking the drug. In some cases, some TD symptoms may improve or disappear; however, for others TD symptoms may continue for long periods after patients discontinue the use of Reglan.
