Taking Reglan can lead to tardive dyskinesia: our law firm can get you compensation

In 2009, the FDA warned consumers about the dangerous side-effects of the drug Reglan. Reglan, a drug prescribed for gastroesophael reflux, is now known to cause the condition tardive dyskinesia. The use of Reglan for 12 or more months continuously is known to cause tardive dyskinesia in 27-29% patients (Tardivedyskinesia.net).

Those who have been seriously injured by tardive dyskinesia as a result of taking Reglan have the right to seek compensation. Weitz & Luxenberg canassist you in filing a lawsuit against those responsible.

What is Tardive Dyskinesa?

Tardive dyskinesia (TD) robs a person of control over their own body. A person afflicted experiences uncontrollable movements or spasms. Aspects of the disease include:

  • Lip smacking
  • Grimacing
  • Tongue protrusion
  • Puckering/pursing of the lips
  • Rapid eye movements
  • Rapid blinking
  • Rapid movement of fingers
  • Rapid arm movement
  • Rapid leg movement
  • Rapid trunk movement

These movements can get extremely painful and can happen constantly in some cases. As of now, tardive dyskinesia is an incurable disease.

Trials and tribulations with tardive dyskinesia

Tardive dyskinesia can not only be painful, embarrassing, but it can also put people out of work permanently.

“My lip hurts from it [grinding against] my teeth,” says a woman suffering from the disease. This woman is on-camera talking to her doctor, and in the span of five seconds, she has about three uncontrollable movements in her face. When the video was shot, this woman was on a drug that decreased the severity of her tardive dyskinesia by half. She developed the disease from taking a prescription drug similar to Reglan (Consumer News Weekly).

Professions such as: actor, waiter, engineer, mechanic, and firefighter are seriously hindered by even the mildest forms of tardive dyskinesia. Because tardive dyskinesia can last a lifetime and is incurable, many people are forced to retire permanently and live life on disability.

Weitz & Luxenberg can help individuals who have developed tardive dyskinesia as a result of taking Reglan. The compensation from a lawsuit can cover expenses such as:

  • Income loss during periods of treatment or hospitalization

  • Any out of pocket expenses related to the incident
