Rehabilitation: Does Age Matter?

People of all ages can benefit from rehabilitation services. It is important to note, however, that rehabilitation goals may differ from person to person, depending on their age.

For example, a younger person after rehabilitation is often looking to restore full and unrestricted function of his or her life. An older person, however, may be looking to restore the ability to carry on as many activities as possible to maintain self-independence and autonomy--i.e., walking, eating, dressing, and bathing.

Nevertheless, age alone should not be a reason to modify the intensity of rehabilitation treatment or the goals that are set for the rehabilitation.

Most rehabilitation programs strive to maximize recovery, so that patients may return home as productive and self-sufficient as possible.
