Rehabilitation: Vision Loss
Blindness can occur at birth, or later in life. Individuals who are born
blind or become blind at a very young age, usually get special training in
school and learn to adapt and compensate for their lack of sight. Individuals
who become blind later in life must also learn how to cope and adapt.
A
common activity that a blind individual generally must adapt to is feeding
oneself, and this is commonly accomplished by teaching the "clock method"
(placing the plates distinctively on the hour zones). It is also beneficial for
a blind person to be trained to walk with a cane. Audio books may assist the
blind person in performing leisure activities. The use of a seeing-eye dog is
normally left for when the individual has already learned to perform everyday
essential life skills.
