Rehabilitation: Hip Fractures
For individuals that suffer a hip fracture, rehabilitation usually begins
swiftly, sometimes just hours following the surgery to correct the fracture. To
prevent bedsores, blood clots and ease the transition to standing, the
individual is encouraged to move and sit up.
Exercises to stretch and
strengthen muscles are usually performed within a short time after surgery, and
the individual is also commonly encouraged to stand up. The injured leg should
at first not bear weight, but rather, gradually transition into bearing weight.
Generally, within days after surgery, walking with or without a cane is
expected.
