Stay away from Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu Brand Contact Lens Solution. It was discovered that ReNu with MoistureLoc could lead to a variety of harmful side effects, including some extremely dangerous ones like the fusarium keratitis fungus, blindness or corneal ulcers.

From Asia to America, How Bausch's Crisis Grew

Bausch & Lomb Pulls Lens-Solution

Bausch & Lomb Inc. said Monday it has permanently removed from markets worldwide a contact-lens solution linked by health authorities to an outbreak of rare fungal infections that can cause blindness. Its shares rose nearly 9 percent.

The Food and Drug Administration said Bausch & Lomb suspects that ReNu with MoistureLoc solution's unique disinfecting and moisturizing agents "in certain unusual circumstances can increase the risk of Fusarium infection."


Concerns spread to more B&L products

Concerns about the safety of Bausch & Lomb Inc.'s ReNu with MoistureLoc have now spread to the company's other contact lens solutions.

New data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that ReNu with MoistureLoc might not be the only B&L product used by contact lens wearers who contracted Fusarium keratitis, a rare fungal eye infection that can damage the cornea.

U.S. health officials said 32 of 58 people with fungal infections used MoistureLoc, which B&L pulled from the market April 10, while 15 more used ReNu MultiPlus and seven used other ReNu brands.

Bausch acknowledges withheld info; stock falls

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Bausch & Lomb stock fell after the maker of contact lenses said it knew about problems with its ReNu contact solution and had recalled the product in Asia months before it stopped selling the product in the U.S.

Bausch (down $0.99 to $47.99, Research) stock price fell Thursday morning following reports that Hong Kong authorities had told the Rochester, N.Y.-based company about eye infections among users of its contact solution in November, 2005.


Eye Fungus Case Count Climbs to 176

The Associated Press reports that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that 176 cases of the Fusarium keratitis virus has been found in 28 states, an increase from 109 cases in 17 states, reported April 9.

The virus can cause scarring cornea and blindness. At least 8 patients have required cornea transplants since the outbreak was discovered, the wire service reports.


Plant was not inspected for 3 years, records show

ATLANTA -- The contact lens solution plant linked to an international outbreak of potentially blinding eye infections had not been inspected by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for three years.

The Bausch & Lomb plant in Greenville, S.C., the sole producer of all the company's popular eye-care solutions sold in North America and most of Asia, was cited for significant lapses in manufacturing processes in May and June 2002 -- the last time it received a regular inspection, FDA records show.

NY Man Sues Bausch & Lomb Over ReNu Contact-Lens Solution

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- A New York man sued Bausch & Lomb Inc. (BOL) in federal court in Manhattan on Thursday over a contact-lens solution linked to several cases of a serious fungal eye infection.

The complaint claims that Bausch & Lomb was aware of link between ReNu with MoistureLoc and an increased cases of fusarium keratitis in Asia as early as February of this year, but waited to suspend sales in the U.S. until earlier this week.


Bausch suspends lens solution, faces lawsuit

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A widely used Bausch & Lomb contact lens solution was pulled from major U.S. retailers' shelves on Thursday at the urging of the company, as a lawsuit was filed charging that it failed to disclose the product's link to serious eye infections among users in Asia.

A Bausch & Lomb spokeswoman said she had not seen the proposed class-action lawsuit and could not comment.


Walgreen Pulling All ReNu Products Off Shelves

CHICAGO — Walgreen Co. (WAG), the largest U.S. drugstore chain, has told its stores to pull all ReNu products from its shelves, not just the MoistureLoc product that has come under fire, a spokesman said Wednesday.

CVS/pharmacy said Wednesday that it would stop selling ReNu Moisture Loc brand contact lens solution in all 5,400 of its stores, pending the outcome of an investigation by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention into concerns about a rare fungal eye infection tied to use of soft contact lenses.
