Many Have Suffered Serious Injuries Linked to Defects in Runaway Toyota and Lexus Vehicles
Since Fall 2009, runaway Toyota vehicles have been linked to a number of serious and fatal accidents which has resulted in one of the largest recalls of cars in the entire country. If you or a loved one has been injured in a car accident involving a Toyota or Lexus car, truck or SUV, please complete the form on this page for important information from our lawyers.
On March 9, 2010, a Harrison, NY woman behind the wheel of a Toyota Prius Hybrid found herself unable to stop the vehicle as she drove down a curved driveway to the street. The vehicle, which only traveled approximately 200 feet, hit a stone wall with such force that the car dislodged boulders weighing over 500 lbs. Fortunately, the woman was not seriously injured.
One week later, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) inspectors and Toyota representatives traveled to the New York suburb to begin their investigation into the crash and review data from the car’s event data recorder in an attempt to determine whether a vehicle defect was the cause of the sudden acceleration that caused the accident.
According to NHTSA officials, the investigation into this crash and other uncontrollable acceleration accidents involving Toyota vehicles has been an inability to recreate the episodes the drivers of these vehicles reported.
Over 8 Million Toyotas Recalled Since September 2009
Problems with Toyota vehicles first reached mainstream media after reports of serious and fatal accidents involving Toyota and Lexus vehicles that had been linked to defective driver floor mats. The first recall involved over 3.8 million Toyota Camry, Avalon, Prius, Tacoma, Tundra, Highlander, Corolla, Venza and Matrix vehicles, as well as Lexus IS250, IS350 and ES350 sedans.
Tragically, the recall came after several fatalities from accidents linked to the defective floor mats, including a California Highway Patrol officer who lost his life when driving an out of control Lexus SUV. His wife, daughter and brother-in-law were also killed in the accident.
A second recall, issued in January 2010, involved over 2.3 million vehicles, including the Rav4, Corolla, Matrix, Avalon, Camry, Highlander, Tundra and Sequoia cars and trucks with defective accelerator pedals. Several million of these vehicles were also impacted by the defective floor mat recall.
