January 14, 2010 - Sarcoidosis is a respiratory and dermatological disease believed to be caused by an alteration in the body’s immune system after exposure to an environmental, occupational or infectious agent. Environmental exposure can occur from toxic air pollution, for example.
Sarcoidosis symptoms
Sarcoidosis is usually asymptomatic, which means there are usually no outward signs that the person has the disease.
When outward symptoms of sarcoidosis do appear, they can include shortness of breath, a dry cough that persists, skin rashes, or inflammation in the eye. Sometimes, a person with sarcoidosis complains of feeling sick and may experience fever or weight loss.
In more than 90 percent of patients with lung sarcoidosis, abnormalities will show up in a chest X-ray. In fact, a chest X-ray is the most efficient way to diagnose sarcoidosis of the lungs, and will reveal symptoms that include swelling and inflammation of the lymph nodes in the chest and a mottled appearance to lung tissue.
X-ray exam for sarcoidosis symptoms
Anyone who suspects they have sarcoidosis of the lungs is urged to schedule an X-ray examination with their family doctor or local hospital.
In severe cases, pulmonary infiltration can lead to lung fibrosis which causes the lungs to stiffen, making it difficult to breathe. Unfortunately, fibrosis is irreversible. If extensive, it can cause severe dysfunction and, at its worse, can lead to heart failure.
