Seroquel, adolescents and possible health risks
Our firm can help adolescents and young adults under 25 who took Seroquel and were diagnosed with diabetes or pancreatitis
Seroquel is an antipsychotic medication belonging to a class of drugs referred to as “atypical antipsychotics.”
Many adolescents have been prescribed Seroquel “off-label”, meaning it has been used to treat patients (such as children) and conditions (such as ADHD, OCD,…) for which it is not approved by the FDA. This, despite the mounting questions about whether so-called atypical antipsychotics are safe for kids. In 2004, the FDA alerted the public that there is a connection between taking the drug Seroquel and diabetes development.
There are very serious risks associated with Seroquel include diabetes mellitus, tardive dyskinesia, pancreatitis and liver disease. There are hundreds of adolescents prescribed Seroquel whose lives were cut short or who must now live with serious, and often permanent, health complications.
Research is accumulating on Seroquel and possible adverse reactions, including a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in January 2009 that highlighted a risk of taking newer antipsychotics such as Seroquel and sudden cardiac death. An accompanying editorial urged doctors to limit prescribing atypical antipsychotics especially to children and adolescents, who can be particularly susceptible to the drugs’ serious Seroquel side effects.
Those side effects, said the FDA, “are of particular concern in pediatric patients because of the life-long nature of these disorders and the fact that these patients are particularly vulnerable, in part because they may be exposed for many decades, and in part because of possible effects on growth and development.”
