Please note: While Weitz & Luxenberg is providing information about Seroquel and a number of physical and mental health-related side effects that may have been linked to the use of Seroquel, the firm is only considering cases in which a child or adolescent was prescribed Seroquel and developed diabetes.
Seroquel, a drug marketed in the United States by AstraZeneca, is approved for use in the United States to treat mental health conditions including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The drug has also been prescribed to treat severe anxiety disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety disorders and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).
Seroquel Side Effects
Health studies of Seroquel have led to questions about the safety of the drug and its link to a number of serious health side effects, including the significant risk for children, teenagers and young adults to develop sudden onset Type 2 diabetes.
According to statistics from the American Diabetes Association (ADA), over 2.35 million Americans (both children and adults) are diabetics. Tragically, ADA statistics also show that diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.
Type 2 diabetes is caused when the body does not produce enough insulin or the body essentially “ignores” insulin levels in the body. Abnormal levels of insulin prevent the body from being able to manage levels of glucose (blood sugar levels).
There is no cure for diabetes, but most Type 2 diabetics are able to control their disease by carefully following the instructions of their doctors. Diabetics must also monitor their diets, alcohol consumption, and must be very careful to avoid both over-the-counter and prescription drugs that may interact with the drugs they must take to treat their diabetes.
Diabetics are also at risk for other health problems which may develop, which include heart problems, kidney disease, liver disease, nerve problems that may affect circulation in the legs and feet, and vision problems.
