Weitz & Luxenberg is accepting cases in which a child or adolescent was prescribed Seroquel and developed diabetes or pancreatitis.
Since Seroquel was first approved for use in the United States to treat mood and mental health disorders, tens of thousands of older children, teenagers and young adults have been prescribed the powerful anti-psychotic drug.
Seroquel, known scientifically as Quetiapine Fumarate, is marketed in the United States by pharmaceutial giant AstraZenaca.
As of July 2010, no generic form of Seroquel is available. However, in January 2009 Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. announced they had been granted approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market a generic form of the drug in the United States. Final FDA approval for Teva to market generic Seroquel was pending the conclusion of drug patent-related legal matters.
Seroquel Patients at Risk for Diabetes
Seroquel,
prescribed to treat certain behavioral, emotional and mental health problems
such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder, obsessive
compulsive disorder (OCD) and schizophrenia, has been linked to
a significantly increased risk to develop sudden onset Type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes, which affects over 23 million Americans, does not yet have a cure. Older children, teenagers or young adults who develop Seroquel-related diabetes face a lifetime of medical care to treat their disease.
In addition to daily blood testing and drug therapy, diabetics must monitor their diet, their use of other medications (both prescription and over-the-counter medicines), as well as their weight and fitness levels.
Diabetics also face possible health complications, as those with the disease are at risk for heart problems, to develop cataracts, glaucoma or other conditions that can permanently affect their vision, and also face pancreatitis, liver disease and kidney disorders.
