Legal Resources for Families of Teens and Young Adults Diagnosed with Seroquel-Related Diabetes
Our lawyers are currently investigating cases of Seroquel patients under the age of 25 who developed sudden onset Type 2 diabetes. Affected families should complete the form on this page to obtain important information about your legal rights and options.
Weitz & Luxenberg is providing information about Seroquel and a number of physical and mental health-related side effects that may have been linked to the use of the drug. However, our law firm is only reviewing cases involving a child, teenager or adult under the age of 25 who took Seroquel and later developed Type 2 diabetes or other serious diseases.
Seroquel, a drug marketed in the United States by AstraZeneca, has been used to treat patients suffering from a number of mental health, emotional and behavior disorders.
Since the drug was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Seroquel (known scientifically as Quetiapine Fumarate) has been prescribed to thousands of older children, teenagers and adults suffering from problems such as bipolar disorder, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Seroquel is also prescribed as an antipsychotic in the treatment of acute mania and schizophrenia.
Seroquel Health Risks
Seroquel has been linked to a number of serious health problems, including an increased risk to develop sudden onset Type 2 diabetes, a disease that requires life-long medical treatment.
Type 2 diabetes is typically controlled by a combination of diet and lifestyle modifications and taking daily oral medications to control glucose and insulin levels. Type 2 diabetics face additional risk to develop serious vision, heart, pancreatic, kidney, liver and circulatory complications, as well as the risk that their condition will worsen, causing them to become insulin-dependent (Type 1 diabetes).
Families of Seroquel patients whose child or young adult develops diabetes may also face additional burdens in helping their loved one to properly monitor and treat their disease. In particular, in cases where Seroquel was prescribed to treat a psychiatric disorder, their mental health problems may prevent them from being able to appropriately monitor their physical health, or they may engage in destructive behaviors (such as abuse of alcohol or drugs) that can cause serious diabetic side effects.
