Seroquel side effects information from our attorneys
Did your child sustain Seroquel side effects?
Our firm is currently speaking with families in which a child or adult under the age of 25 was prescribed Seroquel and developed serious side effects such as diabetes or another serious health problem.
Research is accumulating on Seroquel and possible side effects and adverse reactions, including a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in January 2009 that highlighted a risk of taking newer antipsychotics such as Seroquel and sudden cardiac death. An accompanying editorial urged doctors to limit prescribing atypical antipsychotics especially to children, who can be particularly susceptible to the drugs’ serious side effects.
Those side effects, said the FDA, “are of particular concern in pediatric patients because of the life-long nature of these disorders and the fact that these patients are particularly vulnerable, in part because they may be exposed for many decades, and in part because of possible effects on growth and development.”
Antipsychotic drugs like Seroquel (quetiapine fumarate) have been found to cause extremely dangerous side effects, including diabetes mellitus, acute pancreatitis and hypoglycemia. In some cases, these side effects have resulted in death.
Other very serious risks associated with Seroquel include tardive dyskinesia and liver disease.
If you or a loved one has suffered one of these side effects, a Seroquel attorney at our firm can help your family seek compensation for health problems sustained due to Seroquel.
The most common seroquel side effect is sedation. Seroquel will put the patient into a drowsy state, and will help the patient fall asleep. Even though official guidelines call for the quetiapine dosage to be divided throughout the day, many prescriptions call for the entire dose to be taken before bedtime because of its sedative effects.
Although quetiapine is approved by the FDA for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, it is frequently prescribed for "off-label" purposes including insomnia or the treatment of anxiety disorders.
Other common side effects include: agitation, memory problems, headache, abnormal liver tests, dizziness, upset stomach, and stuffy nose feeling.
