Study Questions "Off-label" Use of Antipsychotics, including Seroquel
On January 19, 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued the following information about a study about the safety of Seroquel. The drug has been linked to a number of serious and potentially life-threatening side effects, including sudden onset diabetes.
Please note: While Weitz & Luxenberg is providing information about Seroquel and a number of physical and mental health-related side effects that may have been linked to the use of Seroquel, the firm is only considering cases in which a child or adolescent was prescribed Seroquel and developed diabetes.
A new study issued by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality finds that using antipsychotics such as Seroquel for "off-label" use, comes without strong evidence that that the drugs are beneficial for such uses. It also cautions that off-label use comes with a risk of serious side effects.
The medications have been approved to mitigate medical issues such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, they have come to be prescribed to millions of patients to treat dementia, depression, and other psychiatric disorders.
The report, Efficacy and Comparative Effectiveness of Off-Label Use of Atypical Antipsychotics, cautions that there is a lacking in strong evidence to say that those off-label uses are effective.
