December 3rd, 2005 (sciencedaily.com)

NEW YORK, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- Despite a promise to cut the amount of money paid by taxpayers for slip-and-fall cases against New York City, the city paid about $70 million last year.

Payouts for sidewalk lawsuits totaled $68.2 million, for an average $30,637 for the 2,226 cases awarded in the last fiscal year. That compared to $71.6 million for 2,581 cases, an average of $27,741, for the previous fiscal year, the New York Daily News reported Saturday.

Don't Let Falls Trip You Up

August 11th, 2005 (prnewswire.com)

Whether it is caused by a wet floor, slippery throw rug, loose cord or objects in the wrong spot, falls in the home happen. The truth is, falls are not only the most common cause of injury among American adults age 65 and over, but are also the leading cause of death in the home, according to the National Safety Council. One in three adults over age 65 falls every year, and 90 percent of the 350,000 hip fractures that occur in the U.S. each year are the result of a fall. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), fall-related injuries can be reduced by removing clutter and items from the home, learning how to fall properly, and performing exercises that strengthen muscles and improve balance.

McDonald's sued for slip and fall on dirty water

June 7th, 2005 (madisonrecord.com)

Catherine Lott filed suit on behalf of her pregnant daughter, Quenetta, who slipped and fell on dirty water in the entranceway of a McDonald's restaurant on Morrison Street in Collinsville.

Lott claims McDonald's is negligent for failing to clean up water that accumulated and tracked into the premises and failed to post warning signs when the restaurant knew the water posed a danger to patrons.
